Book Review: A Place for Delta

HeyHiHello

With all the human accomplishments we witness everyday, such as the oil spill, the global warming and the death of polar bears makes it clear that something is wrong.

And do you know what is wrong?

We are not educating kids about the importance of the environment. Unfortunately in schools, we teach kids languages, math, GYM, etc. but we don’t teach them how to take care of their environment.

So I was reading a book called, A Place for Delta,  that basically gives the basics to all kids and teens about the importance of the environment in a simple and direct way.

The summary of the book:
"Joseph can hardly believe what he has been asked to do. His Aunt Kate, a wildlife biologist, is waiting for him at a research station and needs his help taking care of an orphaned polar bear cub only a few months old. He will leave his friends and family and venture to the farthest northern town in the United States. As the adventure unfolds, Joseph and his newfound Eskimo friend Ada find mysteries wherever they look. The bear cub, Delta, remains in danger. Who would want a polar bear dead? Joseph will have to look to the North Georgia woods to save Delta. When his parents were kids, they too embarked on an excursion into the unknown. Their encounters with the wilderness beyond their backyard have shaped the future for Joseph and Delta. A Place for Delta is about one family's journey—a passage born in the Appalachian Mountains and leading to the Arctic."

A place for Delta written by Melissa Walker is way to deliver the importance of the animals and their ecosystems. The novel also creates an image of the real situation of animals suffering because of human actions in the far North. While reading the book, I learned that polar bears eat seals and guess what? Every year we kill more than 50,000 seals to …. To eat them ourselves. So we are not just destroying their habitat but we are also killing one of their food supplies.

The book was so much fun to read and I think kids and teens should start educating themselves with the environmental issues that are surrounding us.

Here is a fun commercial:

Flying High in the Sky

Flying high in the sky
Thinking when time will go back
Flying high in the sky
Thinking when I will reach the moon
Flying high in the sky
Thinking when I will glow like a star
Flying high in the sky
Thinking when I will get to be like a sun
Having everybody watching my moves
Flying high in the sky
Thinking when I get to have my own galaxy
Flying high in the sky
Looking at earth from the moon
Wishing I could change its colours now
From black and brown to blue and green
Flying high in the sky
Wishing time will go back
To fix what I had done to you
Earth

Environment: Ocean-The Movie

HeyHiHello

Last Tuesday I went to see  Ocean, the movie produced by Disney. Whenever I said to someone that I was going to see the "Ocean" they would tell me it is very educational or it is for kids since it was produced by Disney. Common sense. Well, I was eager to watch the movie anyways or should I say the documentary film.

The film started by showing a kid standing on an ocean's shore, wondering, "What exactly is the ocean?"

So I am going to tell you the answer I remembered from the movie:
"Scientist could give you statistics or history but to know the Ocean you have to see it, feel it and smell it."

Then the camera goes inside the Ocean showing us creatures that I never thought that they ever existed. There were creatures in every colour, shape and form. There are some that used to live in Ocean and moved to land. There are also animals that used to live on land and now live in the Ocean. Example of these animals is the sea turtle.

The film moves to the blue whale swimming in the Ocean peacefully while eating shrimp. Yummy. If you didn’t know, blue whale is the biggest animal ever existed, so it was a great experience to watch it up close.

Then the camera moves to my favuorite part when they go to the arctic.  You get to see the sea seal searching for a sold ice to live on. You see couple of seals sitting on a piece of ice and then it melts which led to two seals sliding off the ice and swimming till they find another safe place. Most of the time they don’t, and end up dying.

So the film showed us the beauty of the ocean but wait till you get to the end of the movie. They showed what humans did to the Ocean:

1-Most of the oceans in the world are polluted. The film shows wheel carts and runoff pollution in the OCEAN.
2-The temperature of it changed which led to death and extinction of many creatures in the Ocean. This is because of the carbon foot print. Human related too.
3- The spill of oil that happened in the Gulf of Mexico. Ok, so that wasn’t in the movie but it is totally related.

People, we have to take a stand. It is our Ocean. These animals are helpless when it comes to stopping us from killing them. They know us ,now, as their enemy and we are their enemy by judging our actions.

Thanks a lot, humans.

The film ends by: "so before you ask what exactly the Ocean is, ask yourself who exactly are we?"

Please support the ocean by taking this pledge.

The movie was an amazing experience and I cant wait for the sequal which will be called "African Cats."

As always we have a video

Earth hour

2009 Earth Hour 11 x 17 inches Style B Movie Mini PosterMarch 27, 2010 from 8:30pm - 9:30pm Earth Hour will take place

We all know what Earth hour is. If you don’t, click here.

By turning off the lights for an hour, you are decreasing the usage of electricity which means you are saving energy. In other words, you are saving the environment. You might agree or disagree that shutting off the lights will help the environment, but let's do it for fun.

There are approximately 120 countries that are participating in Earth Hour this year compared to 88 from last year.

Let's read in between the lines of this event that will take place soon:
  • Earth hour is a way to show our united goal.
  • Earth hour is a way to show our love to our planet.
  • Earth hour is a way to raise our voices above the politician's voices.
  • Earth hour is a way to teach the definition of caring to the most valuables things we own.

In my opinion, instead of calling it earth hour, we should call it earth everyday because we care about it. Whether you are from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia, it is our home and we don’t have any place other than EARTH.

It's never too late to start caring for earth, join earth hour march 27 from 8 30-9 30

Click here to know how you could spend your earth hour.

You also might want to follow earth hour on twitter.

Now, like always, I shall leave you with an amazing video

More later,
Bye

A FREE TREE

The environment seems to be the talk of the present and the coming future

Many countries destroy the forests for business purposes such as woods, building shelters, etc.

We need to take a stand because global warming is knocking on the doors.

We should take a stand by recycling or reducing the amount of electricity we use daily

But one of the effective methods to regain balance to the natural environment is by growing trees.

Here are fun facts about trees:
• A single mature tree can release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings.
• A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15 percent.
• It only takes 30 trees to offset the C02 produced by one car annually.
• There are about 20,000 tree species in the world. The United States has one of the largest tree treasuries second only to India
• Three trees planted in the right place around buildings can cut air-conditioning costs up to 50 percent.
• Trees improve water quality by slowing and filtering rain water as well as protecting aquifers and watersheds.

Maybe the above information gave a little overview of the importance of trees

You are probably asking by now how I could grow a tree
Well, I have the answer for that question
That’s the whole purpose of this post

'Fewer than 50 wild tigers' left in China

On February 14, 2010, China celebrated their new year. It's the tiger year.
In china only 50 wild tigers are remaining. ” The global wild tiger population is estimated to be at an all-time low of 3,200, down from an estimated 20,000 in the 1980s and 100,000 a century ago." We could see the rapid decrease in the last few decades. Should we blame the global warming for that decrease or should we blame the negative actions of human beings towards tigers?

Personally, I think both factors have their effects on the extinction of tigers. As you might have noticed last year the conditions in terms of the weather in China weren’t that good. There were many snow storms and blizzards. It's the kind of weather that China is not used to. Maybe that had an effect on animals in general.

Human begins use tiger bones and related products in international trade. This only explains one thing that tigers were murdered for money. According to this article, China banned the international trade but of course the traders kept on going due to weak law enforcement.

China and 13 other Asian countries pledge to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022. This seems a normal behavior from human begins. They do wrong and try to fix it by doing pledges and petitions and all that kind of stuff that doesn’t help animals in all shape or form.

It might be the last tiger year where actual tigers do exist.

Environment: David Suzuki Wins the Right Livelihood Awards

David Suzuki Wins the Right Livelihood Awards

David Suzuki, who is the Canadian-Japanese environmental activist, won the Right Livelihood Award. If you live here in Canada, then probably have heard about him. We always see him on TV doing commercials on how to save the environment. Also, he had his every monday column in metro newspaper.

So I read his latest post on his blog and he explained how environment is more important then economy. That all countries should put global warming as their priority number one cause we wont have a economy if we don’t have a healthy environment. If you want to read the whole post go here: http://beta.davidsuzuki.org/blogs/panther-lounge/david-suzukis-speech-from-the-right-livelihood-awards/

And now I will leave you with this video:
