Book Review: The Skinny On Networking

What is "Networking"?

You might tell me it's having lots and random friends on facebook or following whomever on twitter.

Well, not really.

Networking: is maximizing the power of numbers.

I learned this definition after reading a book called "The Skinny On Networking." The Skinny On are books series that I will be reviewing four of them in the near future. The first book I read was about networking but before the review, here is why The Skinny On books are different from any books in the same category.

Overview:

The Skinny on are books that sends the message in a clear and interactive way to the readers. It uses sticky people to illustrate which helps the information in the book to stick in our brains. The Skinny On books are not boring unlike other books in the same field. The book uses so many references from other books and online sites.

Review:

This was the only book out of the 4 that had a slow start because at the beginning it was giving an introduction to the book and the sticky people and how they are different from us.

Ignoring the slow start, the book is excellent source of information. It contained lots of history and real life facts. In addition to that it had tools and tips on how to maximize your network. The book could be an amazing read for marketers and publicists and since I am planning to study marketing, I found it very helpful. Forgot to mention that the sticky people were so funny. See it is not boring ( I was expecting it to be boring, sorry, but it failed by expectations). In addition to that, these books were sent to be for review, so that means I will keep them forever which means I will read the book over and over again because it's that useful. No kidding.

I wonder how am I going to review the other books, if that was my least favourite out of the four and I couldn’t stop talking about how good it was. Geez.

So I am going to recall some of the stuff I learned from The Skinny On Networking:

·         When you are in a middle of a conversation, listen more than talk

·         When people ask you to do favours for them, do it because it’s a human nature that they will want to return the favour to you.

·         Try to expand your horizons and don’t wait for jobs to knock on the door.

Ok I think I should stop spoiling the book, but seriously the book is useful for our generation, the Y generation to be exact. Hint: you need a good foundation of network to find a job unless you are lucky.

Today I had my communication lecture and I was surprised when the teacher talked about networking. 

Networking is a big deal, people. I never realized that till I read The Skinny On Networking.

Movie Review: Salt

I just watched a movie called "Salt" starring,  Anglina Joile.  I don’t usually watch action movies and I didn’t even know what the movie was about. I didn’t even watch the trailer before. I wasn’t that eager to watch it. But from the minute it started, it grabbed my attention. Group of North Korean torturing Anglina Jolie, then she is taken back to USA.

I am not going to spoil the movie for you.

But the movie had so many historical events that we are not sure if it's true or not. So basically they started with North Korean torturing an " American Business Women". We all know the history of the cold war and the Korean War. This movie is suppose to be on current events so does that mean North Koreans still torture Americans if they are suspecting them to be spies or not. Because according to my understanding of the movie, that what happened in the first 60 seconds in the movie.

Moving on.

The assassination of John Kennedy. Who killed him? I don’t know.

Well, the movie had its own say on that one.

A Russian spy had something to do with it. A Russian spy killed John Kennedy.  That’s what the movie showed us. It could be just the plot but trust me many of the audience who were watching this movie, will leave the movie theatre thinking that the Russians are the ones who killed John Kennedy.

Well, after all, the movie was great. At least it made me think

Interview: Lauren Baratz-Logsted

So if you follow me on twitter, you would know by now that I had been hinting about posting an interview with an author. Well, guess who is the author for today's post. She is Lauren Baratz-Logsted the author of Crazy Beautiful. She decided to have a blog tour but in a different way. You might ask me what is the different way? Well, instead of asking Lauren Baratz-Logsted all the questions that I could think of, I am only limited to a one question. Its funny because I sent her 5 questions (I mean come on, it was my very first author interview and I was excited for it) but she picked the best and answered it.

Lauren Baratz-Logsted  released her latest book called THE EDUCATION OF BET on July 12, 2010. Make sure to check it out.

What should we expect from the author, Lauren Baratz-Logsted, in the future?

The immediate future for me would be the rest of 2010. On August 31, Bloomsbury will publish my next YA novel, THE TWIN'S DAUGHTER. It's a dark suspense novel set in Victorian England about a teenage girl who discovers that her gorgeous society mother has an identical twin who was raised in the workhouse. Then on October 12, the sixth book in The Sisters 8 series for young readers aged 6-10, PETAL'S PROBLEMS will be published. In terms of the longer-range future, meaning beyond the end of this year, you can expect that I'll keep writing, always stretching myself as a writer in terms of style or genre or age group and hopefully entertaining the reader in the process.

Book Review: White Cat

Today I shall review a book called White cat by Holly Black

This is my poem for white cat:

If you see them wearing gloves

Make sure you stay away from them

They might transform you or block a memory

They might trick you and force you to kill somebody

Allowing you to gain the hate of your soul mate

You thought you killed her

But then you realize that she is a fluffy white animal

But you are smart, at least smarter than your brothers

Realizing what kind of situation they are trying to put you in

You stopped them before you kill someone else

And you start having control on your actions

So it doesn’t matter

If they can play with their curse magic on you

They know that you are more powerful than them

It is confusing on purpose because the plot gets confusing sometimes so you have to be awake to be able to draw the lines. This is my first time to read something for Holly Black but she really did impress me with her unique style of writing.

I read the first part of the book online few months ago but I had to stop because I had eye problems and I couldn’t read it online anymore. Months past and I got the book from the library and started reading it from where exactly I left off. Believe or not I remembered every single thing that happened in the first part. I wish the same thing could happen to me when it comes to studying.

I 100% recommend this book as a summer read and don’t blame me if you fall in love with cassel sharpe (main character). And for you guys, don’t blame me if you start coping cassel sharpe's actions. You can blame Holly Black for writing deep characters.

All the characters had deep and mysterious side to them. You just feel like you need to know more about them. I guess we have to wait for the second book.

Can you keep a secret?

Lets face it people, I am addicted to the new abc series The Pretty Little Liars. One of the things I like about it is  its theme song. Please listen to it and we will continue after.



So I was in my class bored when this theme song running in my head. But the only part I remembered from this song was the " Here's a secret. Can you keep it?" and the rest I couldnt remember. So I thought I should come up with the rest of the song on my own.

Here is what I wrote during class:

Book Review: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

With all the eclipse movie buzz surrounding us, Stephenie Meyer decided to release a new book related to the book "Eclipse". It is called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.

Here is the summary from Amazon.com:

Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by this riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

If you have had read eclipse from before, you might be familiar with Bree Tanner. Bree Tanner is part of the army that Victoria had created to destroy the Cullens. However, while reading the short second life of Bree Tanner, you will get to know Bree's life before the attack on the Cullens. Basically you will learn how is it like to be a new born vampire.

Also reading this book will help you understand some of the stuff that happened in the eclipse the movie that had no explanations in the eclipse the book. Stephenie Meyer successed once again to create, for her main character, a unique voice. I thought there would similarity between Bella's and Bree's voice in the novel but Bree was very distinguish. One thing that I didn’t like about The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner was that she was too mature for her age. She is only 15 years old but she is very mature and smart. Maybe vampires become smart and mature no matter what's their actual age is.

Other than that I truly enjoyed reading this book. And you will enjoy it too.

Khalad Said

Imagine if you got killed for saying no?

For refusing to show your ID?

Imagine dying because you tried to expose drug dealers working in the police.

On June 11, a 28 year old male died in Alexandria, Egypt.  He was a normal guy who decided to go fishing and then went to a net café because there was no access to internet at his home. Let's assume he was checking his facebook or twitter when two guys came to the café asking for people's ID. Khalad Said refused to show his ID. In a split of a second, he was arrested and beaten. The café owner decided to interfere; he asked the two guys and Khalad Said to leave the café at once. And so they did. They went in front of Khalad's building and started beating him. Then he was taken in a police truck, a covered truck, and came back after fifteen minutes. If you want to see Khalad's picture after he was beaten up, click here.  

After Khalad said's death, the government declared that he was a drug dealer and he swallowed a drug called bango which led to his death. If that is true, why was he tortured? Why there were all these bruises on his face and his body? Why did he even swallow the  bingo in the first place?

The two guys who worked for the police were released for no proof. But with all the protests that happened in Egypt, things heated up. The two guys got arrested again and they will go under a trail in a few days.

What do I have to do with a guy who died in Egypt or somewhere else, you might ask?

Well, I am here to convince you that the death of Khalad Said could have an impact on you.

Rule: whatever happens in another country has an impact on you. Whether you live in that country or far away from it, it will impact you.

For example, when Iraq wasn’t doing so well, USA invaded it and who paid the price…. The soldiers'  families and the Iraq people.

Another reason:

We all should care about each other. Why? Because we all share the same blood color. Red.

Book Review: A Place for Delta

With all the human accomplishments we witness everyday, such as the oil spill, the global warming and the death of polar bears makes it clear that something is wrong.

And do you know what is wrong?

We are not educating kids about the importance of the environment. Unfortunately in schools, we teach kids languages, math, GYM, etc. but we don’t teach them how to take care of their environment.

So I was reading a book called, A Place for Delta,  that basically gives the basics to all kids and teens about the importance of the environment in a simple and direct way.

The summary of the book:

"Joseph can hardly believe what he has been asked to do. His Aunt Kate, a wildlife biologist, is waiting for him at a research station and needs his help taking care of an orphaned polar bear cub only a few months old. He will leave his friends and family and venture to the farthest northern town in the United States. As the adventure unfolds, Joseph and his newfound Eskimo friend Ada find mysteries wherever they look. The bear cub, Delta, remains in danger. Who would want a polar bear dead? Joseph will have to look to the North Georgia woods to save Delta. When his parents were kids, they too embarked on an excursion into the unknown. Their encounters with the wilderness beyond their backyard have shaped the future for Joseph and Delta. A Place for Delta is about one family's journey—a passage born in the Appalachian Mountains and leading to the Arctic."

A place for Delta written by Melissa Walker is way to deliver the importance of the animals and their ecosystems. The novel also creates an image of the real situation of animals suffering because of human actions in the far North. While reading the book, I learned that polar bears eat seals and guess what? Every year we kill more than 50,000 seals to …. To eat them ourselves. So we are not just destroying their habitat but we are also killing one of their food supplies.

The book was so much fun to read and I think kids and teens should start educating themselves with the environmental issues that are surrounding us.
